Exterior colors fade

Do some exterior colors fade more quickly?

The short answer is, yes.  Some exterior colors tend to fade more quickly.  Some of these colors are yellows, blues, greens, and reds.  There are several variables that aid exterior paint fade to occur.  Some of the variables may include damage by direct sunlight (UV), inferior quality paint and location of property.

Overtime, direct sunlight, or ultraviolet rays (UV), will destroy the color pigment in paint.  As a result, you may notice a huge change between the shaded parts of your home exterior compared to a fully exposed side.  The same is true for artificial light and its effect on works of art.  If allowed to persist long enough with paint, the damage will begin to show a bleached look.  If left unprotected even longer, eventually cracks will begin forming allowing for water to penetrate causing further damage.

There are many qualities of paint available to consumers on the market.  Choosing the right one, will give you the advantage.  Yes, quality paint will not be cheap, however, it will last longer than cheap paint and in return save you money.  Every professional painter will have their own brand of paint that they may be loyal to.  With each paint manufacture there are different tiers of paint.  Your painter will help you decide which is best for your project and provide you with the paint lifespan as indicated by the manufacture.

There are few factors that will assist in the longevity of a professional paint job.  Choosing the right color, sheen, number of coats and quality paint will give you the advantage for a long-lasting paint.  Some colors that will be more fade resistant may include whites and tans.  The next thing to keep in mind is that paint manufactures recommend applying 2 coats of paint.  To increase the longevity the paint sheen you choose will also aid in protecting the actual paint from UV light.  For exterior, a satin or semi-gloss sheen is highly recommended.  If you are living in the Grants Pass, Oregon and surrounding areas, and are looking for a professional painter click here for your free estimate and discuss the best color for your home.
